How to deal with loneliness while solo traveling?

Dealing with loneliness as a solo traveler can feel daunting, but it’s often the key to the most rewarding experiences. In my travels, I’ve found that it’s easier to meet people on the road than back home. Everyone’s already in the mindset of exploring and connecting. Social hostels and common backpacking routes are home to some of the most welcoming people I’ve ever met, including the locals. People in these settings are usually open and eager to share their own stories and hear yours.

In moments when I’ve felt isolated, journaling or reaching out to fellow travelers has always helped me reconnect. And, sometimes, a phone call home can change your mood completely.

Eating alone, a fear for many, has become one of my favorite parts of solo travel. It’s an opportunity to truly soak in a new culture, from savoring street food in bustling markets to enjoying quiet dinners in scenic spots. Keeping a journal, sitting at communal tables, or simply people-watching can turn meals into moments of reflection and growth.

Solo travel also has an unexpected twist: it’s often far more social than life at home. While the fear of loneliness is common, I’ve discovered the real challenge is actually finding moments of solitude. Travel fosters connections; whether you’re chatting with fellow adventurers at a social hostel, joining group hikes, or simply striking up conversations on public transport. I’ve shared meals with strangers who became lifelong friends and explored cities with people I met just hours before. It’s a constant flow of human connection that’s both invigorating and deeply enriching.

That said, it’s still important to carve out time for yourself. Journaling in a quiet café or taking a solo stroll can help you recharge and reflect. One of my favorite things to do is put my headphones in and just wander when I’m feeling lonely. This balance of social interaction and personal space is one of the unique joys of traveling solo.

Ultimately, solo travel allows you to embrace independence, push your boundaries, and experience the world on your terms. It’s a journey of self-discovery and connection, and there’s no better time to start than now. For more insights, tips, and inspiration, visit my blog, Solo Han.

I can’t sing enough praises about Hannah’s travel planning! I have told everyone I know about her services – and everyone is always shocked and how much she helps with for such a low price. Hannah planned me a 6 week trip in between matching for residency and graduating from medical school. I was able to go all around Japan, southern Thailand, and northern Vietnam. From the beginning, she was kind, patient, and adaptable as my ideas changed quickly. Throughout my trip, my dad, brother, and best friend all come visit me at different times and she planned each section of the trip perfectly for their personalities! She even found an English speaking fly fishing guide in Japan for my dad! She made so many changes for me during the trip as things came up, like when I realized I wanted to work scuba diving into my itinerary, spend more time in HaNoi, or change my HaGiang loop dates. She never made me feel like a bother even though it was so much work for her to make all these changes and do so much research. I did the larger package that included day-to-day planning and it was so worth it. She found me the most incredible hostels - I was easily able to make friends at every stop along the way! And when I needed a break from the hostel life, she was able to find really great guesthouses/cheap hotels. She had great recommendations about good food in the area or secret beaches to not miss. A super underrated bonus was the organized to-do list she made while trip planning. I was super busy with residency interviews during most of the planning process and she made prioritized lists for me to check in on to ensure nothing fell through the cracks. She checked in on me numerous times throughout the trip and truly cared so much about me having the absolute best time. I cannot say enough good things about Hannah and her work! It is such a steal for all of the things that are included in her packages. I will absolutely be booking her again!
